Encouraged by her parents, Durinda has always expressed herself in art. After receiving her master's degree in art education from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, she has taught classes ranging from child to adult and college levels. Her award-winning works have been in numerous international and national exhibitions and are represented in corporate and private collections. Durinda devotes herself to painting full time, in watercolor and oil on canvas, choosing the medium to fit the mood of the scene.
"Although a Realist painter, Durinda works with watercolor in a loose, expressive style." (Ann Nichols, Arts Writer, Chattanooga Times Free Press, 1997.)
Durinda finds inspiration for her watercolor and oil paintings in European and Southern architecture and landscapes. Many studies done on site ("en plein air") are transformed in the studio into larger master works of art, in the manner of the Impressionist painters.
Locales for the European Series include scenes from her travels to Italy and France such as Italian streetscenes and vineyards, Parisian parks, and Monet's Garden.
Durinda's Southern Series of watercolor paintings are inspired by the coastal cities and environment of the southeastern U.S.
The Commissioned Works gallery offers a selection of various subjects. Whether working with the jewel-like colors of a sunrise or the patterns of late-afternoon cast shadows, Durinda's paintings capture the essence of the subject. She accepts commissions to add to your collection or as a special gift and will work with you to select the perfect size and price.
She maintains a working studio in northern Georgia where she lives with her life partner, William, and their feline companion, Clarice. After closing her teaching studio in May 2007, she is now able to share her painting expertise with others by leading workshops. You will be able to combine travel to some of the most beautiful areas of the US and abroad with lessons in painting and drawing in a workshop designed by Durinda. You may request more information for 2007 and 2008 workshops by email.
